Self-deprecation, the subtle art of laughing at oneself, is a fascinating subject that raises many questions about human psychology, emotional intelligence and social interaction.

Self-deprecation can be both a strength and a weakness, depending on how it's used. Like a double-edged sword, it can cut through our insecurities or hurt us if mishandled.

It can be a powerful tool for reducing the hold our weaknesses have on our self-image1. It allows us to take a step back and play down difficult situations. It's a bit like having a superpower that turns our flaws into comic assets!

However, when used excessively or inappropriately, self-deprecation can reflect a lack of self-confidence or disdain. It's a bit like trying to put out a fire with petrol - it can get out of hand!

A SIGN OF INTELLIGENCE OR NOT?

Surprisingly, self-deprecation is often considered a sign of high intelligence. Indeed, intelligent people tend to have a greater awareness of their own limitations and are more apt to laugh at them. It's as if having a high IQ automatically gave you a premium subscription to “Jokes About Yourself Magazine”!

A study by the University of New Mexico even showed a correlation between a sense of humor and performance on intelligence tests. Who would have thought that clowning could be a sign of genius?

SELF-PROTECTION OR NOT?

According to Serban Ionescu, professor of psychopathology, self-mockery can serve as a defense mechanism. It can spare the person in difficulty the painful affects that his or her situation should entail. It's like wearing invisible armor made of jokes about yourself!

However, we must be careful not to use self-deprecation as a permanent shield against any criticism or vulnerability. After all, even the best comedians can't stay on stage 24/7.

Self-deprecation can take many forms: the comic exaggeration of one's own shortcomings, subtle irony about one's own actions or decisions, mocking imitation of oneself, or the humorous narration of one's own misadventures...

Choose your favorite weapon of self-mockery, but remember: with great comic power comes great responsibility!

Self-deprecation generally has a positive effect on others. It can facilitate exchanges with those around you, attract sympathy, or perhaps even enable others to be kinder to themselves.

It's like a super social lubricant, but without the annoying side effects!

But beware, the perception and use of self-deprecation can vary from culture to culture. A Spanish study showed positive results linked to self-mockery, but the researchers stress the need to analyze possible cultural differences in this relationship to self-mockery.

So, before you whip out your self-deprecating repertoire on your next trip abroad, make sure your jokes don't get lost in translation!

As Pierre Desproges so aptly put it: “You can laugh at everything, but not with everyone”.

So laugh at yourself, but in moderation - after all, you wouldn't want to steal the show from all the other comedians around you!

SELF-DEPRECATION CAN BE A USEFUL TOOL IN MLM | MULTI-LEVEL MARKETING

Its effectiveness depends largely on the context and the way in which it is used.

To build trust: Self-deprecation can help humanize your image and create a more authentic connection with your prospects and downlines. By acknowledging your own shortcomings or past mistakes, you can appear more honest and approachable.

Defusing tensions: In an often-criticized field like MLM, self-deprecation can be an effective way of recognizing negative stereotypes and addressing them head-on. This can help defuse tensions and open up a more constructive dialogue.

To differentiate yourself: In a market saturated with similar marketing messages, self-deprecation can be a way of standing out and attracting attention. A humorous, self-critical approach can be refreshing for consumers used to more conventional discourse.

ON THE OTHER HAND, BEWARE OF EXCESS (AS IN ALL THINGS) 😊

  • There may be a risk of losing credibility: Excessive use of self-deprecation could damage your professional credibility. In MLM, where trust is crucial, you obviously need to strike a balance between subtle humor and seriousness.

  • Misinterpretation is always possible: Humor, including self-mockery, can be subjective. What seems funny to you could be misinterpreted by some prospects or members of your network, and potentially damage your professional relationships.

  • Always consider the cultural context: The effectiveness of self-deprecation can vary from culture to culture. In some contexts, it could be perceived as a sign of weakness rather than humility...

In conclusion, I believe that self-deprecation can be a powerful tool in MLM when used with discernment. It can help create a more authentic image and build stronger connections with your network. However, it's crucial to use it in a measured and appropriate way, which ultimately fits well with the DNA of our industry.
