Africa: The youngest continent has the world's Greatest superpower, its youth ! It's time to unleash it through Direct Selling

In a world gripped by aging populations, shrinking workforces, and economic uncertainty, Africa stands tall as the youngest continent on Earth. Over 60% of Africans are under the age of 25. In many countries, less than 3% of the population is over 65. This demographic structure is not just a statistical curiosity; it is Africa's greatest superpower.
But power is only potential until it is activated. That activation must come through mass-scale training, entrepreneurial opportunity, and market access. And there is one vehicle tailor-made for this mission: direct selling and network marketing (MLM).
Africa is at the cusp of a historic demographic dividend—a window in which the working-age population surges relative to dependents. This window, however, will not remain open forever. The continent must act fast and decisively.
The direct selling model is uniquely positioned to unlock Africa’s youth potential:
It offers low entry barriers: No need for high capital, just training and motivation.
It is community-oriented and trust-based: Perfect for Africa’s relationship-driven societies.
It is scalable and mobile: A smartphone and a product can launch a micro-business in minutes.
It educates by doing: Sales skills, confidence, and leadership are built from the ground up.
What’s needed now is strategic, ethical scaling. For that, national Direct Selling Associations (DSAs) are essential. They provide structure, codes of conduct, and safeguards against illegal pyramid schemes. This is why I urge the World Federation of Direct Selling Associations (WFDSA) to accelerate its efforts to establish strong DSAs in Africa’s leading economies.
I know this continent. I live it. I believe in it. And I have seen how direct selling changes lives—from the rural entrepreneur in Uganda to the university student in Lagos. The potential is immense. But potential alone is not enough.
We must train. We must organize. We must invest.
Africa can, and I believe will, become the world champion of direct selling—if we give its youth the platform they deserve.
