In some cases, MLM can serve as a springboard to a political career

In sub-Saharan Africa, I personally know a leader who is particularly close to his network of distributors, with strong human qualities, and to whom I “predicted” - almost in jest - a political career if he carried on like that. He didn't believe a word of it. I believed it a little more. A few years have passed. Today, he's a beloved and respected MP!
Here are several aspects that explain this transition, in connection with the example I mentioned:
1. BUILDING A SOLID, INFLUENTIAL NETWORK
MLM is all about building a network of distributors and customers. This requires developing interpersonal skills, building trust and positively influencing others. A leader in MLM can quickly build a vast network of people who trust him or her. This relational capital, once acquired, becomes a valuable strategic resource for a political career, where mass mobilization and popular support are crucial.
In the example I cited above, the MLM leader was able to create a large circle of contacts which he was able to turn into political support, with his MLM collaborators becoming his voters and supporters.
2. LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT SKILLS DEVELOPMENT
MLM leaders learn to coach and motivate teams, communicate effectively, inspire confidence and show initiative. These leadership skills are directly transferable to the political sphere. Knowing how to manage conflicts, expectations and make crucial decisions for the group are qualities that are just as necessary in politics as they are in MLM.
In the case of my example, this person gained significant leadership experience through his responsibilities within his MLM network, which enabled him to become a leading political player.
3. ABILITY TO COMMUNICATE AND INSPIRE OTHERS
Success in MLM depends heavily on the ability to effectively communicate a vision and inspire confidence. Persuasive speeches and the ability to unite people around an idea or project are assets in both MLM and politics. MLM leaders need to convince their teams and customers of the merits of the products they sell and the opportunity that the business represents.
This charisma and ability to inspire, demonstrated in MLM, are often the same that enable an individual to succeed in politics. My example illustrates this: this leader, convinced and sincere in his commitment to MLM, was able to transpose this same energy into his political discourse.
4. EMPATHY AND COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
A good MLM leader doesn't just sell products, he also invests in the personal development of his teams. These are often people who care about the well-being of others, which is an important trait in a good politician. In a context like that of sub-Saharan Africa, where community involvement is a central aspect, being perceived as someone who helps and supports others can greatly enhance an individual's political legitimacy.
In my example, the leader helping others to grow in their MLM business has unquestionably reinforced his public image as someone dedicated to improving the living conditions of others. This aspect is crucial in a political career, where empathy and commitment are valued.
5. LOCAL VISIBILITY AND REPUTATION
MLM enables a leader to become known locally and acquire a certain notoriety. This increased visibility in a community, combined with sincere and effective work, can quickly transform an MLM leader into an influential public figure, which is a springboard for a political career. In many countries, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, political figures emerge from local networks and their ability to make a name for themselves on the ground, long before they rise to the national stage.
So, my example of the MLM leader who became a member of parliament shows how the visibility gained in this activity, combined with genuine social commitment, could lead to a position of political influence.
CONCLUSION
MLM can be a pathway to politics because of the leadership, communication and networking skills that this activity enables you to develop. Personal qualities, such as empathy, commitment to others, and the ability to mobilize a support base, are also key factors in facilitating this transition.
In contexts where close relationships, charisma and community involvement are essential, as in sub-Saharan Africa, MLM can be an effective gateway to a political career, as shown by the example of this leader who became a member of parliament.
